Bill Hughes > Saw this Red-tailed Hawk in the coiled razor wire atop the security fence at the base of the New Jersey tower of the George Washington Bridge. I thought it was trapped in the barbs. This is not a great picture - all I had was my cell phone camera. I'm still kicking myself for not bringing the Nikon D-80! After this shot, it relocated 100 yards south.
Bill Hughes > The Redtail seemed like a youngster. It had downy fur on the chest and did not take off as I approached.
Bill Hughes > I got as close as I could.
Bill Hughes > But I guess the Redtail had things to do and places to go. It took off for the trees.
Bill Hughes > From the corner of my I saw the Redtail dive from the tree. We thought it had fallen at first. It had spotted lunch in the tall grass. It had just landed and I wanted to grab another shot as the wings spread. The menu on the screen was washed out by the bright sun and I could not get the picture. The hawk took off with a tasty rat in the talons. The rat was not agreeable to this arrangement, however, and squawked a protest as it was carried off to wherever the feast was to take place.
